SPOTLIGHT ON OUR OWNERS  –  NUMBER 3

DAVE STADDON       (Part Three)

1998 –  Another greyhound i owned with Janet Drake was Jans Fellow, he won a couple of races but injury curtailed his career.
1999 –  Virtual Mist was the last greyhound i had with Janet before she went to look after her cats..Virtual Mist was not very good and went from Wimbledon to Catford, and was placed with Alison Ingram, She was even worse at Catford and was retired.
The same year i owned a dog named Black Sonna with Barry Torry. He was bought off Alison while we were there with Virtual Mist. He went on to run 100 races winning 16 times! ‘Sonna’ was a good fun dog to have, he would check at the first or he would sail straight round – but only Sonna knew the answer to that one!
2000 – I owned a dog called  Edies Champion which was named by Jim Boothby after my mother! He turned out to be a really good dog. ‘Edies’ won 460 metre flat, hurdles and 660 metre races in all different grades. He had 126 races winning 20 times!
When Sonna retired i bought Sperrin Valley from Alison. We landed a nice touch first time out but he was injury prone and was retired early.
2001 – I owned Cape Canaveral with Barry Torry. He was a great hurdler, very fast, but had a hock injury early into his career but came back and still managed to win a few races.
2004 – With Barry Torry and John Taylor i owned a bitch named Go Free. She won her second race like a very promising bitch but was attacked at the pick up! Being a very nervous bitch she would not take the first bend after that. Despite leaving her off for a couple of months nothing changed and she was retired.
2005  – Josh The Dosh i owned with Barry and Gilbert Dowse. He was a great crowd pleaser but had his quirks – would he want to go or not? Despite his ‘character’ he managed to win an open race at Coventry. He came back from a broken hock and still won many races. Great fun to own!
2005-7   Tap Nodrog and Boher Ellen were bought as a package. Ellen was very slow and was retired early but ‘Noddy’ managed to win races in A7, A8, and A9 grade. Noddy’s claim to fame was to win her first three races in different years, December 06, December 07, and January 08. Has anyone else had that happen to them?
2007 – I owned Katie Crystal with Ted Lewis and Barry Torry who was Trained by Bernie Doyle. ‘Katie’ was a born fighter and managed to last for 6 races before being red carded!
Boherash Flash was another i owned with Ted and Barry with Bernie Doyle and was a genuine grader A6-8 who ran over 100 races and won quite a few.
Boherash Hanna again with Ted and Barry and Bernie was an extremely nervous bitch but managed to win 13 races.
I should point out that the reason the last three dogs were with Bernie Doyle was that I and Barry helped out Ted Lewis with his kennel bills. Sadly while Hanna was still running both Ted and Barry passed away.
Boherash Einri [Henry] Norman Smith bought ‘Henry’ when he went to visit his cousins in Eire. They lived along the lane from the Boherash kennels. ‘Henry’ was really good clocking 27.80’s several times! His only fault was booking restaurant tables as he came off the last bend! (reference as to how wide he raced). He ran 158 races
winning 27 times!
