Spotlight On Our Owners – Dave Staddon
SPOTLIGHT ON OUR OWNERS – Number 3
DAVE STADDON (Part 5)
2010 – Had shares in Mwebe Hilda who was owned with the Rally Town group. A good fun dog to have. He won his share at Wimbledon over 480 & 668 metres reaching the Semi-Final of the St Leger! Unfortunately did not take to Hove and was retired.
Cals Patron for the Power of Seven {Alan Spriggs, Mick and Debbie Williams, Ross Banner, Martin and Michael Mckinley and myself}was a real good dog who went through the grades at Wimbledon and was also good at Hove! Ran 107 times and won 18 finally retired through injury.
Droopys Genesis was bought for a large sum with Trevor Cooper and family. She did not start brilliantly but after a ‘season’ she started to improve and ended up top grade at Wimbledon. The distances at Hove were no good to her so she was transferred to Gemma Davidson at Crayford where she is still plying her trade!
When ‘Genesis’ made a slow start to her career the Dunphys kindly sent Droopys Bounce (Cocoa) as a replacement. Cocoa started brilliantly winning A2 at Wimbledon and we thought of winning the Oaks with her! But things went disastrously wrong when she was coming out of season. She was seriously ill for many weeks as something was wrong with her immune system. She went down to 16kg from 26kg but thanks once again to the love and care of Norah and the rest of the kennel staff she pulled through and is now the darling of the kennels.
Coolavanny Keira and Coolavanny Kayla were bought as pups with the Rally Town owners! We bought these two as they were by Rally Towns mother – Coolavanny Town. Both were good servants who have won their fair share of races. Kayla (19 wins) has recently been retired but Keira (19 wins) is still running at Hove.
2011 – Druids Gaffney was bought with Ross Banner and Alan Spriggs and was aimed at the 2012 Springbok but things did not work out in that. Still managed to win Open race hurdles but alas shattered his leg in a fall at Coventry and was retired.
Kaiyas Shakira was bought at the Newcastle sales {a long drive for Alan Spriggs} We had originally bought a Droopys bitch but when we collected her from the kennels she was as lame as anything. We then said to each other we had come such a long way so we had to go home with something and we bought “Shaky” for £500. She was not 100% but great fun to have. Alan and Carol have recently taken her home as her last injury was one too many.
Ballymac Benefit was owned by the ‘power of seven’ syndicate. ‘Bennie’ was really good at Wimbledon not so at Hove where injuries have played their part. She is still running in A4-A5 grade and long may she continue.
2012 – Abidal was a complete and utter disaster! The video of him in Ireland was very encouraging but he never showed anything in England and was retired after having been given all the time that was needed.
Ballycarroll Boy i owned with friends at Hove {trained by Ken Tester}was a very fast dog in sprints and over 515 metres. Sadly ‘Basil’ developed a heart problem and has had to be retired.
Memories Fashion was syndicate owned and was highly promising but she was injury prone and had to be retired after just 14 races.
Druids About Time (Lofty) another hurdler owned by Ross, Gary, Paul and myself {Ross did like his hurdlers}was once again bought with the Springbok in mind. He was fast enough but was disappointing in races and retired early.
Cellini was purchased at Henlow sales with Ross, Trevor, Martin, Gary, Dave Reynolds and myself. Turned out to be a good buy winning many races in good grade at Hove.
Couture was bought for decent money and was just coming to her peak when she broke her hock in a solo trial at Peterborough. Still at the kennels as Norah has kept her to have a litter from as she is so well bred.
Droopys Brody is another sales dog bought with Ross, Gary, Paul and myself. Highly promising start winning some good races including a 642 metre Open at Sittingbourne which left him badly dehydrated and he took quite a time to recover. Despite winning a Bags Championship race at Swindon he has as yet has not reached his previous
form.
Chaussini cost a small fortune which was shared by eight of us so imagine the disappointment when he was disqualified at Hove in a trial. We were promised a replacement and after a lot of haggling by Norah and Brian we were sent Kizi who has turned out to be a high class sprinter! Winning the Silver Salver at Sittingbourne among many other Opens. He is now back after 4 months off and has won three out of his last four. Chaussini incidently turned up in Chile where he is champion sprinter!
Droopys Design with Lisa Beauchamp in Bermuda!
2013 – Droopys Design was my biggest solo purchase and i soon realised he was not half as good as he was supposed to be. Norah once again got me a replacement and ‘Dessie’ was bought to run for the Racing Club. Now retired and lives with Club members Lisa and Lee Beauchamp in Bermuda!
Droopys Como was ‘Dessies’ replacement and looked highly promising in trials but alas he broke his leg in his first race! Thankfully he survived the operation to repair it!
Glenvale Stevie was bought at the sales and is owned with Trevor, Ross, Gary, and Ron Steiner. Started really well and was going for the Romford Puppy Cup but was injured in the first round. After four months off he has come back better than ever winning sprints at Hove and Sittingbourne as well as a dual distance competition at Sittingbourne. Reached the 2nd Round of this years Derby at Wimbledon. Still improving and who knows how good he will be!
Floppy Pete bought at the Henlow sales with Ross, Gary and Jim managed to win three in a row at Hove! Don’t ask me how! Picked up an injury soon after and has just been retired.
Coologue Gem bought at the same Henlow sales cheaply. So i was surprised she graded as high as she did even more so when she won an A2 first time out! She ran well in all her races until she suffered a hock injury and then season and has been missing for five months. On her way back now and won her Heat of a Sittingbourne competition last Sunday and runs in the Final tonight!
Lobelia was also bought at the same sales with Ross, Jim and Ted Lloyd on whose recommendation we bought her for £300. Ted returning to ownership after nearly 30 years. Bella is running in A4-A5 and A6 grade and more than holding her own.
Jemma The Snake runs at Crayford and is owned with Trevor. Wins her share of races in low grade.
Blazing Swallow – Owned with Ross and the Mckinley brothers wins her share and has just returned from injury and season and has already won twice with hopefully more to come!
Shatter and Go [trained by Ken Tester] Owned by myself and Ted we took a share when asked to make the numbers up in a syndicate [soft touches]. Started well and has risen to A3 now! Off injured but has just returned to racing.
Razldazl Clyde – Owned with Trevor, Gary and Dave Reynolds. Purchased from Dolores Ruth with this
years Springbok in mind but was injured in trials. He then suffered a health scare from which he has just recovered. Back racing now in sprints and has already won 5 races up to now. Looks like there is a lot more to come.
2014 – Ardbeg Champ [With Ken Tester] Bought by the Ballycarroll syndicate. Started really well and has won a owners bonus race. Now running in A1-2. Could be more to come.
Fine Royal – Sheffield sales purchase with Ray Wheeler. Graded in at A5 but is still learning his trade. Hoping there is more to come from him.
Mineola Prof – Hall Green sales purchase where i had to bid against myself to get the price high enough! Just graded in at Hove. Your guess is as good as mine as to how good he might be!
As you can see my enthusiasm has not dimmed after 40 plus years. Still a sucker when asked to make the numbers up in syndicates!

Finally I would like to thank Norah and all the staff over the years for the way they have always looked after and cared for all the dogs! And also for the warm and friendly welcome we always get on Sundays!
